Kilimanjaro & Arusha

After landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), we will gather for one night in Arusha, an ideal location before setting off on a Serengeti safari.

Saturday, May 1 & Sunday, May 2 1

Arusha, a picturesque African gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti, began as an agricultural trading hub in the 1830s. In 1900 it was conquered by the Germans who established the town as permanent residence for their military. With an appreciation for its past, Arusha displays over 2 million years of history within the National Natural History Museum, showcasing exhibits of early civilization and plant and animal life in the very building the Germans used as their main military fortress. Full of culture and vibrant experiences, Arusha provides a perfect introduction to Tanzania.

Sunday, May 2 – Thursday, May 6, 2027 1

Experience the ultimate wildlife destination in the vast, untamed landscape of Serengeti National Park. Home to the world’s second largest mammal migration, the Serengeti is known as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa and one of ten natural travel wonders of the world. Approximately 70 different types of mammals roam the Serengeti along with 500 bird species. Prepare to witness these animals in their natural environment, such as the wildebeests, gazelles, giraffes, and zebras alongside the “Big Five:” the lion, leopard, African buffalo, elephant, and rhinoceros. The Serengeti is one of the best places in the world to view majestic lions in their natural prides. The Maasai tribe, a group of strong warriors who live alongside the Serengeti wildlife, occupied much of the area in the past. After surviving a major drought in the 1890s, the Tanzanian government relocated the Maasai people, allowing the animal population to recover from the drought. Now, the Serengeti showcases an abundance of African wildlife and one of the oldest ecosystems on the planet.

Climate

In the Serengeti, temperatures in May average 80° F during the day to 58° F overnight. There may be some rain or thunderstorms during our stay.
